HKDR

Whenever I visit California, I always get bombarded by dogs. Not because there are loads of strays, actually come to think of it – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a stray in Irvine – but because both my older brother and sister have two dogs each. Since I alternate my stays between both of their houses, there’s usually always dogs around me. Every time I come back, I’m reminded of how much dogs seem to be like people. It awes me that through the personalities they have, I can actually pin-point what type of kid they would have been in high school.

Chubby, my sister’s beautiful beagle, would be the beautiful, spunky football chick who has ADD. Mickey, my sister’s half chihuahua/half corgi, would be the guy with dependency issues due to his dark past (my sister really did save Mickey from an abusive family). Twinky would be the spoiled princess who is a cheerleader, and although sometimes she is very annoying and dependent, you just can’t help loving her. Point is… it’s insane how each dog seems to have such a dynamically different personality. Every single one of Chubby’s siblings have completely different personalities, each with their own quirks and lovable characteristics.

Well, it’s no secret in HK that there are stray dogs and cats around – probably more cats than dogs. Anyway, Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) is an organization which takes in abandoned dogs and tries to find them new homes. I never knew of HKDR’s existance until two of my friends brought up the subject. Apparently, HKDR used to have its dog kennels located on Pok Fu Lam road but they recently changed locations to 6 Shek Lin Road, Tai Po. If you’re less interested in adopting an adult dog, on Sundays they have puppy adoptions available at Whiskers N Paws. Sunday’s puppy adoption begins at 2pm and ends at 5pm, the address of Whiskers N Paws is: 10/F Horizon Plaza, Ap Lei Chau. There are a lot of dogs waiting for a home, so if any of you are thinking of getting a pet, please consider adopting from HKDR… and if you are planning on getting a pet, please make sure that you have the time, energy and responsibility to take care of him or her. They deserve to be treated like your kids and I’m pretty sure none of you would ever abandon them… at least I’m hoping not.
